SEMINOLE – Starkey Elementary has implemented its own relief effort to assist the victims of Hurricane Charley.
The school sent a letter to all of the families, and student patrols collected loose change in jars labeled “Coins for Kids.” PTA members collected monetary donations and relief goods at the car circle and in the multi-purpose room. Relief items collected include: Bottled water, diapers, bug spray, Gatorade, baby wipes, toiletries, baby formula, blankets, cleaning supplies and school supplies.
Two of the school’s faculty members have families who were directly affected. Mrs. LeConte, the school’s media specialist, has a son who is a police officer for the city of Wauchula. He has offered to hand deliver all donations for the city. Many schools in Wauchula were damaged or destroyed, and they are in need of school supplies.
Mrs. Bruckler, a kindergarten teacher, has family members who work for the Charlotte County fire department. Two of four fire departments were destroyed in the storm, and all of the firefighters on duty lost their personal vehicles.
