PINELLAS PARK – A fire destroyed a barn the night of Sept. 2, killing 11 of the horses that were inside.
A total of 25 horses were inside the barn at the time of the fire, according to Tim Caddell, the city’s public information officer. One of the horses was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.
The call came in at 10:30 p.m. Units arrived 10:35 at the site of James Anvil Acres, a private ranch on 60th Street North, outside the city limits in unincorporated Pinellas County, within the Pinellas Park Fire District.
When the firefighters arrived, the barn was completely in flames. The blaze was not totally put out until 11:20 p.m.
Caddell said the barn was totally destroyed. He said the cause of the fire could possibly be the organic decomposition of wood chips, a pile of which was brought into the barn in preparation of an approaching hurricane.
Because the property is outside the city limits, the county Sheriff’s Office is completing the investigation. Mac McMullen, of the sheriff’s public information office, said the investigation as to the cause of the fire is still undetermined, but that investigators did not see anything that would appear suspicious.
