SEMINOLE – Found hanging from a light pole by a thin piece of twine, a battered opossum’s bloody, lifeless body dangled. A newborn baby opossum was still alive and was clinging to its mother.
An SPCA of Pinellas ambulance was called to the scene at the Lakeview Mobile Home Park Sept. 9. SPCA humane officers found the severely beaten opossum with a note and a pair of headphones hanging on its body. The note read, “I’m suicidal so I hung myself, b..ch.”
Unknown assailants had beaten the opossum to death with a blunt object. Witnesses say they spotted two teenage males in the field where the opossum was found around 11 p.m. the night before. One of the teens was swinging a stick about 4-feet long. At the time, the suspects were carrying something, but were scared off by approaching headlights.
The SPCA of Pinellas is working closely with the Sheriff’s Office to track down those responsible for this act of cruelty. Anyone with information concerning this case is urged to contact the SPCA at 586-3591 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS. Animal cruelty can be reported anonymously.
