Study: No traffic calming measures needed for Ridge Road

SEMINOLE – A recent traffic study by city officials on Ridge Road indicated no major problems and no action necessary.
Two members of the neighborhood around Ridge Road and 75th Avenue recently told city councilors speeding was an issue along Ridge Road and a threat to public safety.
However, following a traffic survey by the city’s Department of Public Works using a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office radar speed monitoring trailer, it was determined speeding was not a serious problem.
Over the course of the three-week study, the trailer recorded 54,903 trips with an average speed of 25.17 mph. Two speeds of 55 mph were recorded and most of the speeding in the 30-mph zone was between 5 and 7 p.m.
“According to city policy, this indicates no further action is necessary by the city,” said City Manager Frank Edmunds. “However, I’ve instructed our community traffic officers to maintain additional surveillance for the next four weeks.”
According to the city’s residential traffic calming policy, excessive speed is when the measured 85th percentile speed is 12 mph or greater in excess of the posted speed but in no case less than 37 mph, regardless of the posted speed.
Excessive volume is when hourly traffic volume is greater than 12 percent of the average daily traffic or more than 10 daily trips per household.
