Rotary Club’s Nov. 17 dinner, auction to benefit 2 charities

SEMINOLE – Plans are moving ahead quickly for the Rotary Club of Seminole’s second annual dinner and auction Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Sirata Beach Resort in St. Pete Beach.
The black-tie optional event benefits two charities each year. It generated about $44,000 after expenses in its inaugural year for Community Action Stops Abuse and the Ronald McDonald House in St. Petersburg.
This year’s beneficiaries will be Pinellas Village and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Northern Florida, Suncoast Region.
“We got tremendous attendance and support from the community last year,” said publicity chairman Kip Janes. “Even with the slowdown in the economy we’re still slugging it out and getting a lot of things coming in (for the auction).”
The event features both silent and traditional auctions, which the Rotary Club is still accepting donations for.
“We like to have 18 to 28 really large items (for the traditional auction) and another 75 to 125 groupings of silent auction items,” said Janes.
Among the bigger items are a one-week timeshare in Hawaii, various baskets including a Jimmy Buffett basket that includes a parrot, a night’s stay at the Don CeSar Beach Resort, a one-week stay at a Key West resort, a membership to Seminole Lake Country Club and outdoor furniture.
Tickets to the event are $100 and include dinner, dancing, two drinks and the auction.

Pinellas Village is an apartment community and self-sufficiency program for single-parent families. Since opening in 1992, more than 300 residents have earned a certificate or degree, 158 have found full-time employment in their field and 71 have purchased homes.
Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has provided a wish-granting network for more than 144,000 children with life-threatening medical conditions.
