SEMINOLE – While the majority of the Oct. 25 City Council meeting focused on finding chairs for the couple of hundred mobile home residents at the meeting, other business items on the agenda quickly received approval.
A 3 percent pay raise received final approval, bumping up the councilors’ annual pay to $5,562 from $5,400. Vice Mayor John Counts voted to leave the salaries as is.
No raise was approved for Mayor Dottie Reeder who earns $9,300. A salary analysis in the area showed that the mayor’s salary was comparable to others while councilors’ pay was below the average mark.
The sale of beer by a nonprofit organization at the 2006 Pow Wow was approved by the council. If interested in selling alcohol, nonprofit groups should send a qualification letter and specific documentation to Jim Sheets, Pow Wow festival chairman, by Dec. 2.
Documentation must include proof that the group is a Seminole-based, nonprofit organization; proof of an alcoholic beverage license and information showing what or whom the proceeds will benefit.
The Pow Wow will be on Friday and Saturday, March 17 to 18, 2006.
With the budget approved, the council OK’d funds for the engineering and design of restrooms at Blossom Lake Park. Tampa Bay Engineering has received the $20,000 earmarked for this effort. Getting rid of the Port-O-Let and building restrooms moved up in priority last year in response to citizens’ concerns.
Tampa Bay Engineering also will be doing an analysis on Tequesta Drive to figure out how best to deal with drainage issues. This consulting work should cost about $4,000.
Citizens can expect to see significant landscaping improvements along Park Boulevard over the next few months.
Morelli Landscaping Inc. won a recent $115,000 contract to clean, mulch, water and maintain that stretch of road for one year. Common names of plants to be added include green buttonwood, blue pacific juniper, crape myrtle, Indian hawthorn and confederate jasmine.
Deputy Dave Swanson received an appreciation resolution for his work as community policing officer over the last year.
“Deputy Swanson was most conscientious in the fulfillment of his duties, and many local policing issues have been resolved directly through his efforts,” the resolution stated.
Swanson will continue to work with the sheriff’s office as a corporal within patrol division assigned to Seminole.
