Mall to host free prostate cancer screenings
Article published on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005 |
SEMINOLE – Free screenings as part of the Drive Against Prostate Cancer will be offered on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Publix in the Seminole Mall.
One in every 18 prostate cancer deaths comes to Florida men. Worse yet, it’s one of the only states in the country that does not have a law requiring insurance companies to cover annual prostate exams. In Tampa alone, three men die from the disease every month.
Despite the troubling statistics, there is hope through early detection and education. That’s why the National Prostate Cancer Coalition is coordinating with the Tampa Bay Oncology Center to bring free prostate cancer screenings.
The screenings are conducted in a 39-foot Airstream Land Yacht XL, owned by Thor Industries and designed specifically for prostate cancer screenings. Local licensed physicians conduct a two-part screening procedure, including a complexed Prostate Specific Antigen blood test and physical examination. The exams are free, in part, thanks to Bayer Diagnostics that donates the test kits.
No appointment is necessary. Call (888) 245-9455.
