Canned goods drive SEMINOLE – City Councilor Leslie Waters is conducting a canned goods drive through Dec. 12. All products will be donated to Seminole churches and Salvation Army food pantries. Waters schedules town hall meetings SEMINOLE – Seminole City Councilor Leslie Waters plans two Town Hall Meetings in early December when she will present a program titled “2009 City of Seminole in Review.” In addition, she will discuss city projects and challenges for 2010. Local business and citizen input is encouraged. The meetings are set Saturday, Dec. 5, 10 to 11 a.m., at the Seminole Bowling Center, Park Boulevard and Park Street; and Monday, Dec. 7, 11 a.m. to noon, Freedom Square, Roskamp Auditorium. Those attending the Freedom Square meeting should R.S.V.P. to 398-0244. No R.S.V.P. is necessary for the Dec. 5 meeting. Those attending are encouraged to bring donations of canned goods, which will be given to local Seminole church food pantries.
Advance Auto Parts opening SEMINOLE – Advance Auto Parts will open Nov. 19 in an outparcel at 7399 Seminole Blvd. The site is at the southeast corner of Park and Seminole boulevards where a Hollywood Video store was once located. Symposium at sea SEMINOLE – Brookdale Senior Living, the parent company of Freedom Square and Lake Seminole Square senior living communities, plans a brain symposium during a seven-night eastern Caribbean cruise Feb. 27 to March 6.
Attendees will be able to join Dr. Kevin O’Neil, a specialist in internal medicine and geriatrics, for this Cross Train Your Brain seminar. Participants will learn the benefits of brain fitness, and the many ways to accomplish improved cognitive ability, including physical activity.
O’Neil will be a featured speaker with a discussion tailored to older adults with the goal of improving cognitive health and reducing the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias through practicing several lifestyle factors.
The symposium will be held aboard Holland America’s newest 5-star ship, ms Eurodam. The ship features 11 passenger decks, a Pan-Asian restaurant topside and a lounge surrounded by panoramic views overlooking the ocean. Expo, card show SEMINOLE – Seminole Mall, 11201 Park Blvd., will present several events in the coming weeks. Mall merchants invite local Seminole businesses to join in the next monthly Seminole Area Community Expo on Friday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m. to noon. The monthly event also includes music by the Country Roadrunners, products from local businesses and information on health organizations, volunteer opportunities and local health providers as well as a table with information on Walking for all Ages. The mall welcomes walkers Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. The expo will feature businesses and nonprofit organizations in the Seminole and Pinellas County area. Bay Pines VA Medical Center family education SEMINOLE – The Bay Pines VA Hospital is offering a family education series for the loved ones of those who have served in Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. The series focuses on reintegration and adjustment issues and is open to veterans, family members, and friends of those returning from service in Afghanistan, Iraq, or other global war on terrorism theaters. The sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bay Pines VA Hospital in the Domiciliary, Building 102, A Wing, Room 131.

Addis graduates from Legion College SEMINOLE – American Legion Post 252 member Mike Addis graduated Oct. 30 from the National American Legion College in Indianapolis following a six-day crash course in leadership. The curriculum focused on Legion post revitalization. Those attending also were provided the instruction and tools to construct resolutions for American Legion activities at their respective posts for presentation at a mock district meeting. The National American Legion College is designed to reinforce a volunteer’s leadership, management and communication skills. It helps prepare young members of The American Legion to lead the nation’s largest wartime veterans organization on the local and state level. The importance of mentorship for both other members and special groups in the community was a central point to several of the activities for the class.
