Night parade canceled SEMINOLE – The fifth annual Bright Before Your Eyes Holiday Night Parade was canceled Nov. 22 due to rain. The event will not be rescheduled due to costs. Despite the rainout, parade organizers had to pay for police services in advance. Chamber officials said the city, which contributes to the parade, is not in a position to pay again for a rescheduled date.
Meeting for recycling, sustainability SEMINOLE – A meeting to discuss local recycling and sustainability efforts is planned for Monday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Seminole Community Library, Program Room C. Lions Club pancake breakfast SEMINOLE – The Lions Club of Seminole plans its fall pancake breakfast Saturday, Nov. 28, 7:30 to 11 a.m., at the Seminole Elks Lodge 2519, 10717 Seminole Blvd. The all-you-can-eat event will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, orange juice and coffee. The price is $4. Glaucoma checks to be done by the Eye Institute, also diabetes testing will be offered plus Florida Blood Services will be on hand for blood donations from 8 to 11 a.m. The Lions have been helping the sight and hearing impaired for more than 80 years through various means such as the guide dog program, eye banks around the world, the Florida Blind and Handicapped Camp, Lighthouse for the Blind, Eyeglass collection for third world countries plus local purchase of glasses and exams for those in need. Author Tim Dorsey at library SEMINOLE – Novelist Tim Dorsey, author of the Florida-based thrillers “Nuclear Jellyfish,” “Atomic Lobster” and others, featuring the wild adventures of Serge Storms, will speak about his books on Monday, Nov. 30, 7 p.m., at the Seminole Community Library. Dorsey’s novels have been described as slapstick comedies, grand adventures featuring vastly larger-than-life heroes and villains, wacky plots, and plenty of laughs. Serge Storms, the manic, unpredictable lead character in the stories, along with his sidekick, Coleman, travel the Sunshine State, tripping in and out of desperate situations. Copies of Dorsey’s books will be available for purchase and signing by the author. The library is located on the Seminole campus of St. Petersburg College, 9200 113th St. N. Elves for Elders program SEMINOLE – Residents will have a chance to get into the holiday spirit a few weeks early this Christmas season with the Elves for Elders program at the Seminole Mall. Patrons can pick a tag off the tree in Bealls Department Store with the name of a needy senior or disabled person’s name on it. The next step is to buy an item or two and return the gifts unwrapped by Dec. 1 to Diane Vandiver in the Freedom Square marketing department or to Rooth & Rooth, elder law attorneys, in the mall. The project provides gifts for elders and disabled persons who are wards of the state and who have no funds or family to provide them basic necessities or a gift at the holidays. Kiwanis Christmas lot SEMINOLE – The Kiwanis Club of Seminole will begin selling Christmas trees Friday, Nov. 27 at its lot on 113th Street next to the Seminole Chamber of Commerce. Hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday, 5 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 7 p.m. All trees are Fraser firs. All proceeds from the sale go to youth and community projects. This is the 48th year the club has sold trees. Eugene Mohney is chairing this year’s effort.
Junior Woman’s Club food drive SEMINOLE – The GWFC Seminole Junior Woman’s Club plans its 11th annual Share the Spirit food drive to help needy children in area schools. Last year the club supplied over 30 baskets to families. The club will be putting together the food baskets that will be given to the local elementary schools for the children and their families. The club needs community help with donating from local businesses, social clubs, service clubs, school clubs, and individual families.
