Meeting for recycling, sustainability SEMINOLE – A meeting to discuss local recycling and sustainability efforts is planned for Monday, Dec. 7, 10 a.m. to noon, at the Seminole Community Library, Program Room C. Winterfest, tree lighting SEMINOLE – The city’s 10th annual Winterfest and Tree Lighting is set for Saturday, Dec. 12, 5 to 9 p.m., at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road. Admission is free. Winterfest begins at 5 p.m. and continues to 9 p.m. Activities include the tree lighting ceremony, Seminole High School choir, holiday entertainers, the arrival of Santa Claus, hayrides, entertainment by Shana Banana, Holiday crafts, bounce houses, and manufactured snow for kids to play on. Food and beverages will be available for sale by the Seminole Firefighters Local 2896. All proceeds will go to help local families. For more information, call Duane Crandall at 391-8345.
‘Ice Age 3’ under the stars SEMINOLE – “Ice Age 3” will be the featured film when the city presents its Holiday Movie Under the Stars Friday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m., at Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road. Admission is free. Shining Waters Girl Scout Troop will perform its Yule Log presentation, entertain with singing and hand out cookies. Santa is also expected to make an appearance. Christmas Bazaar at Harbor Light MHP SEMINOLE – Residents of Harbor Light Mobile Home Park plan a Christmas Bazaar sale Saturday, Dec. 5, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will include a craft sale, baked goods, jewelry and a raffle. Breakfast With Santa SEMINOLE – The city of Seminole's annual Breakfast With Santa is Saturday, Dec. 19, 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N. The breakfast includes pancakes and sausage, a visit from Santa, a make and take craft project, and other fun holiday activities. It is co-sponsored by the Seminole Kiwanis breakfast club. Tickets are $5 a person (ages 2 and up). Deadline is Thursday, Dec. 17. Space is limited. For further details, call 391-8345.
December luncheon SEMINOLE – Seminole Recreation plans its Spirit of Christmas Luncheon Tuesday, Dec. 15, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Recreation Center. The menu consists of ham, scalloped potatoes, vegetable, salad, rolls, dessert and coffee and ice tea. The Christmas entertainment for the luncheon is “Happy Days” with the Guiffre Brothers and the catering will be provided by Freedom Square. The cost is $8 a person. Tickets must be purchased at least three days before the luncheon. The movie matinee is “Night at the Museum,” which begins at 1:15 p.m. For more information, call 391-8345.
Elves for Elders program SEMINOLE – Residents will have a chance to get into the holiday spirit a few weeks early this Christmas season with the Elves for Elders program at the Seminole Mall. Patrons can pick a tag off the tree in Bealls Department Store with the name of a needy senior or disabled person’s name on it. The next step is to buy an item or two and return the gifts unwrapped to Diane Vandiver in the Freedom Square marketing department or to Rooth & Rooth, elder law attorneys, in the mall. The project provides gifts for elders and disabled persons who are wards of the state and who have no funds or family to provide them basic necessities or a gift at the holidays. Freaky Friday SEMINOLE – The city next Freaky Friday Kids Night Out program is Friday, Dec. 4, 7 to 11 p.m., at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N. All children will get a slice of pizza and a drink. This month kids can enjoy bounce houses, $1 sandy candy and the ultimate glow stick dance party. The cost is $10 a child and all participants must have a current Seminole Recreation Card to participate. Members have the option to bring nonmember guests for $15. Free smoke alarm program SEMINOLE – The city of Seminole Fire Rescue Department provides installation of smoke alarms at no cost to all residents. Residents are encouraged to have at least one smoke alarm on each floor of their home and one outside each bedroom area. To request an appointment for installation of a free smoke alarm, contact the city’s public education officer at 393-8711. Citizens outside the Seminole fire district should contact their local fire department for similar services.
Recreation board opening SEMINOLE – The city currently has an opening for a volunteer member on the Recreation Advisory Board. The board serves as a liaison between the Seminole City Council and the Recreation Division. It meets on the first Monday of the month from 6 to 7 p.m. The board discusses recreation-based issues, reviews budgets and makes recommendations to the recreation director on behalf of the Seminole community. Applicants must be Seminole residents and have a strong passion for recreation and parks. For more information, call 391-8345.
