SEMINOLE – The city will save about $7,000 in 2008 over the original budgeted amount for law enforcement services by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
The City Council unanimously passed an amendment Dec. 11 to the city’s contract with the Sheriff’s Office, which will eliminate one crossing guard position.
Instead of eight crossing guard positions, the Sheriff’s Office will provide seven.
Councilor John Counts asked which position will be eliminated.
“The entrance to City Park at Ridge Road,” said City Manager Frank Edmunds. “It is no longer needed at that location.”
Vice Mayor Thomas Barnhorn questioned whether it would also eliminate the school zone at the site.
“Yes it will,” said Edmunds. “The (Pinellas County) School Board will eventually eliminate it. The cross walk will remain but the school zone designation will be eliminated.”
The city will pay the Sheriff’s Office $1.62 million for law enforcement in 2008, which is 3.3 percent more than the $1.56 million it paid in 2007.
In other action, the City Council:
• Amended the 2008 budget to recognize additional revenue of $274,213 from city reserves. The largest portion of the amount, $99,364, will be used for architectural standards, while $67,600 will be used for storm drainage projects and $$43,801 for the proposed public works facility.
• Unanimously passed a resolution authorizing Edmunds to enter into a contract with the Pinellas County Supervisor of elections for the March 11 municipal election. City Councilors John Counts and Bob Matthews are up for re-election.
