Plans to protect vehicles
 |
- Before the storm, cover or park the vehicle inside a garage or other enclosed area.
- Make sure the vehicle's fuel tank is full.
- Place emergency equipment inside, including booster cables, tools, tire repair kit and spare tire, matches, flashlight with batteries and shovel. If a chance exists that evacuation may be required, also pack a small hurricane kit of necessities or make sure enough room will be available inside for the household hurricane kit.
- After a storm, avoid driving on coastal or low-lying roads because of flooding dangers. Never attempt to drive through flooded areas. Keep away from downed power lines. Do not leave the vehicle if its hit by a power line. Wait for help. If its absolutely necessary to leave the vehicle, because of an medical emergency or rising flood water, make sure the vehicle is not touched when jumping to safety. Try to land on both feet as far from the vehicle and downed lines as possible.
- Drive with caution in areas with debris.
- Remember traffic signs may be missing and traffic signals inoperable.
