Kathy Gaston

Kathy Gaston has volunteered for more than 30 years as the town of Belleair’s archivist. She is shown with a resolution the Town Commission adopted May 21 in her honor and behind her is a new plaque for the room.

BELLEAIR — The town’s archive room was named in honor of Kathy Gaston, who has volunteered for more than 30 years as the town’s first and only archivist.

Town officials adopted a resolution May 21 honoring Gaston for her work, saying that she has assembled and organized countless documents, stories and artifacts of Belleair’s history and single-handedly established and compiled the town’s archival collection.

Deputy Mayor Karla Rettstatt said she has been involved with Gaston on many projects and was grateful for the hard work she does for the town.

“People don’t realize what it takes to cut all these things out and to save all this stuff — this history, and you have done a phenomenal job,” Rettstatt said.

Town Manager J.P. Murphy said the archives are a great resource for the town to have, and none of it would be possible without Gaston.

The newly named “Kathy Gaston Historic Archives” are home to hundreds of binders and thousands of records that date to the late 1800s.
