Injuries reported in crash involving deputy in Pinellas Park

Ronald Reed Jr.

PINELLAS PARK — Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 30-year-old St. Petersburg man May 1 after the vehicle he was driving crashed about 9:49 a.m. at 5361 62nd Avenue North in Pinellas Park.

Deputies assigned to the sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team say Ronald Reed Jr. was driving a 2004 BMW 645CI westbound on 62nd Avenue North at the time of the crash. Deputy Joshua Short, 29, was driving a fully marked 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe, also traveling westbound on 62nd Avenue North.

According to investigators, Deputy Short was stopped for traffic just west of 53rd Street North. Reed, however, failed to stop and struck the passenger side rear bumper of Short’s agency vehicle.

Reed’s vehicle left the roadway and entered a ditch on the north side of the roadway, crossed over a residential driveway, then struck a second ditch, where the vehicle came to rest.

Reed and his front seat passenger, Abrielle Smith, 19, of St. Petersburg were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Deputy Short was also transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.

During the investigation, deputies discovered that Reed was driving on a revoked license. When he was released from the hospital, Reed was arrested for felony driving while license revoked (third offense) and transported to the Pinellas County Jail. Bail was set at $5,000.

Deputies say speed does appear to be a factor in the crash.
