MADEIRA BEACH — Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies say nothing seems suspicious about the drowning of a 71-year-old St. Petersburg man that occurred about 12:39 p.m. June 8 at the Madeira Beach Access County Park, 14400 Gulf Blvd.
Deputies responded to the park after receiving reports of people yelling for help. When they arrived, deputies saw people carrying Osman Pehlivanovic out of the water.
Witnesses told deputies that Pehlivanovic entered the water to assist his 12-year-old grandson in the high surf, when the older man became unresponsive.
Sgt. Greg Horton, 39, and two others, described as good Samaritans, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Pehlivanovic until Madeira Beach Fire Department arrived. The good Samaritans were identified as Denise McCoy, 53, and Soraya Savage, 36.
Pehlivanovic was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The grandson was uninjured.
