EAST LAKE – A 37-year-old New Port Richey man died at a local hospital from injuries suffered during a single-vehicle crash that occurred about 4:47 a.m. Jan. 27 on East Lake Road.

Florida Highway Patrol says Ruel Depante Ramos was a passenger in a 2002 Ford Focus being driven by Kyle Stevens Birdyshaw, 25, of New Port Richey.

Troopers say the Focus was traveling northbound on East Lake Road approaching Pasado Drive, when for an unknown reason, Birdyshaw lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway. Birdyshaw overcorrected and the vehicle traveled back across the roadway, entered the median where it rotated before colliding with a light pole and then striking a tree.

Ramos was transported to Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center in Hudson where he later died. Birdyshaw suffered serious injuries and was transported to Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor.

It is unknown if the crash was alcohol related. Charges are pending.
