PINELLAS PARK – Pinellas Park police arrested a 16-year-old Oct. 26 in connection with the shooting of a bicyclist, who died Oct. 25 at a local hospital.

Jason Allen Olivo-Smith of Pinellas Park was charged with first degree murder and booked into the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center

Police responded to the 6600 block of 62nd Avenue North about 7 p.m. Oct. 23 to assist fire department personnel in what had been reported as a bicycle accident. The adult male bicyclist, later identified as John Chesterfield Asch, 44, was transported to Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg for treatment. Investigating officers were later notified by the hospital that Chesterfield, who was homeless, had suffered a single gunshot wound.

During their investigation, detectives learned that Olivo-Smith made contact with Asch Oct. 23 at a convenience store at the corner of 66th Street and 62nd Avenue. Detectives believe Olivo-Smith gave Asch some money to buy him beer. Asch then rode away on his bike with the money heading westbound on 62 Avenue. Olivo-Smith chased down Asch on his bicycle and shot him in the head with his handgun.
