SEMINOLE – The Seminole Community Library, 9200 113th St. N., will unveil a new giant chess set during a special event at the library Saturday, March 23, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The chess set is a gift from Mark Ely, the city’s community development director, and the Friends of the Seminole Community Library. Ely is no stranger to donating to the city’s community programming. He’s often dug into his own pocket to purchase items needed at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex. In recent years, he purchased iMac computers, graphic pen tablets and displays, a green screen, creative software programs and more of the technology needed to create the Digital Den, a digital arts studio, at the recreation center. He also donated $50,000 to renovate the center’s Teen Room.

During the March 23 chess event, members of the Two Towers Chess Club, the library’s teen chess club, and the Seminole Chess Club will create two teams to try out the new giant chess set.

After that, the chess set will “be left out rest of day ‘till 4 p.m. for anybody wants to try it out,” said Allan Bohrer, secretary/treasurer of the Seminole Chess Club.

Tampa’s Corey Acor, a three-time USA chess champion and FIDE World Chess Master, will compete against multiple players in a simultaneous chess match from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. He’s also Florida’s current speed champion, has been designated a Life Master by the United States Chess Federation and has a rating over 2200, “which is very impressive,” Bohrer said.

Bohrer said he’s excited for members of the Two Towers Chess Club to meet Acor.

“For many of them, it will be their very first time shaking hands with anyone of that caliber,” he said.

The event is also designed to introduce newcomers to the game of chess, he said.

“You always want to draw younger people and it’s one of the things I wanted to achieve,” Bohrer said.
