SEMINOLE — Registration is open for the 14th annual Tri If You Dare Youth Triathlon, which will take place Sunday, June 30, at the Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. N.
Children ages 5 to 12 will run, bike and swim to the finish line. The course is adjusted based on each child’s age group, said Duane Crandall, recreation coordinator.
Ages 5 and 6 run 1/4 mile, bike 1 mile and swim 25 yards; ages 7 and 8 run 1/2 mile, bike 2 miles and swim 100 yards; ages 9 and 10 run 3/4 mile, bike 2 miles and swim 100 yards; and ages 11 and 12 run 1 mile, bike 3 miles and swim 150 yards.
Tri If You Dare is a great introduction to the world of multi-sport events, Crandall added.
“For kids who have never done a triathlon or multi-sport competition, this is a good place for them to start,” he said.
Seminole Recreation staff strive to create a positive environment for children participating.
“The emphasis is not as much on the competition as it is about just getting there and doing it,” Crandall said. “It’s very positive, very fun, people are there cheering them on the whole way.”
Early bird registration fees are $35 before June 10 and $45 on or after that date. No race day registration is available.
Around 200 children participate in the event each year and registration will be capped at that number, Crandall said. He anticipates registration filling up quickly and suggests parents register their children soon.
Register online at myseminole.com/website/tri-if-you-dare or in person at the recreation center.
A mandatory packet pick-up date for those participating is scheduled Saturday, June 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the recreation center.
There will be a variety of vendors set up with information and activities for the children set up that day. Crandall said it isn’t too late for businesses and organizations to get involved.
The recreation department will also hold three week-long triathlon training camps leading up to Tri If You Dare. Camps will be held at the recreation center June 10-14, June 17-21 and June 24-28.
