Mungo Jerry espoused the simple philosophy that “life’s for livin’” in their 1970 debut single “In the Summertime.” Seals & Crofts sang of jasmine in bloom in “Summer Breeze” and Nat King Cole paid tribute to the “days of soda and pretzels and beer” in his 1963 song “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer.”

Why do we romanticize summer?

School’s out. Whether you’re a kid or a kid-at-heart, the summer months boast seemingly endless afternoons spent with friends on the beach or at the poolside. Vacations, staycations and day trips offer an escape from the norm. Summer is a time of playful freedom, first love, adventure and relaxation. It’s time to enjoy well-earned downtime or spend time making memories with your family.

For those who use Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends as bookends to the summer, the calendar is full of arts and entertainment possibilities, from summer festivals and music events to theater offerings and museum exhibits.

Following are some of the top festivals, music events and local destinations to thwart the summertime blues in the coming months.

The tour comes in conjunction with the release of “The Individualist: digressions, dreams and dissertations,” Rundgren’s first-ever autobiography reflecting on both his phenomenal career as well as his rollercoaster of a personal life.

Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front Nazz, the quintessential ‘60s psychedelic group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, Runt. But it was 1972’s seminal “Something/Anything?,” on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted him into the superstar limelight,
